60 Second Ad Script:
Augusta Powder Works
The only
building project ever undertaken by the Confederate government was the Augusta
Powder Works in Augusta, Georgia. Constructed in 1861, it included 26
buildings and stretched for two miles down the Augusta Canal.
The Augusta
Powder Works was one of the great success stories of the Confederacy. It
produced nearly 3 million pounds of gunpowder for the South during the War and
was never captured.
Today, the
only thing that remains of the powder works is the huge obelisk chimney. In
2010, the Georgia Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the local Augusta camp,
raised $200,000 to restore the chimney. This indomitable monument to the
Confederacy is now ready to stand for another 150 years and is open to the
public on the canal walk in Augusta, Georgia.
This moment in history was brought to you by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
