60 Second Ad Script:
Georgia's
Secession Convention
In February of
1861, delegates from six states, including Georgia, met in Montgomery, Alabama
to form the Confederate States of America.
Jefferson
Davis from Mississippi was elected president; and Alexander Stephens, a former
Georgia congressman, was elected vice-president of the new Confederacy.
Another
Georgian, Robert Toombs, was selected to serve as the first Secretary of State
but later resigned in order to serve on the battlefield as brigadier general.
On February
18, 1861, standing on the steps of the statehouse in Montgomery, Alabama,
President Davis was sworn into office. Georgia's participation and leadership
was vital to the formation of the new Confederacy.
