60 Second Ad Script:
Georgia's
Secession Convention
In January of 1861, delegates elected from across the state of Georgia
assembled in the capitol at Milledgeville to discuss the subject of secession.
The election of Lincoln and big government the previous November had already led
to the secession of four other Southern states.
Although some men such as Alexander Stephens favoured remaining in the union,
the powerful arguments for secession and independence by men like Robert Toombs,
Thomas Cobb, and Eugene Nesbit filled the chamber with excitement.
On Saturday, January 19th, convention president George Crawford announced that
secession had won the day with an overwhelming vote of 208 to 89.
Cheers swept across Georgia as the people celebrated their independence!
