Union
Blockade
Before the War
of Northern Aggression, Northern industrialists were furious that the South
continued to buy foreign goods. They believed the South should buy Northern
goods, even if they were inferior or more expensive.
After the
North declared war against the South, Lincoln saw a way to end Southern trade;
he launched "The Anaconda Plan."
This complete
blockade of the entire Southern coast was intended to stop supplies from
coming in and Southern cotton from going out
Daring
Southerners became blockade runners in fast ships, and more than 80 percent of
their runs were successful; but their ships were too small.
Overall, the
blockade cut off 95 percent of trade from Southern ports, making it impossible
for the agrarian South to trade for the goods needed to win the war against
the cruel, industrial North.
